Hauser grew up in an artisan environment. His father, Joseph,
built and played zithers and other musical instruments. Hermann
quickly acquired his father's talent and began building zithers
at the age of 18. In 1905 he started building guitars and
lutes and also joined a guitar quartet as a performer. Hermann
Hauser was known for experimenting with the construction of
alto and bass guitars. Hauser met Andres Segovia in 1924 during
Segovia's first concert tour through Germany. Segovia wondered
if Hauser's fine artistry could be applied towards the construction
of a guitar using the Spanish pattern, such as the style of
Torres and Ramirez. After a long time, in 1937, Hauser finished
an instrument that Segovia appreciated and performed in many
tours.
